On September 17, Nvidia released the 3080 Graphics cards for $699 USD. With the new generation of RTX chips comes the improved specs such as a 760 GB/s bandwidth, an improved airflow system providing up to 55% more air, Ampere Architecture, etc. This year Nvidia has offered better performance than its previous generation’s flagship for almost half the price. The 3080’s performance dwarfs the 2080’s by being able to provide double the performance with Ray Tracing on.
With all the upsides does come some downsides. Nvidia will also be releasing the RTX3070 and RTX3090 graphics cards that also perform very well. The ‘3070’ card will outperform the ‘2080ti’ card for only $499 USD and the ‘3090’ card will outperform the ‘3080’ for $1500 USD. This leaves the RTX3080 graphics card in a difficult situation. If it outperforms the previous flagship but is more expensive than another model and is outperformed by the new flagship and is cheaper, what place does the ‘3080’ have? The ‘3070’ could be seen as the “budget friendly” card and the ‘3090’ could be seen as the “raw power” card, why does this card exist?
Nvidia would have been fine to replace the ‘2080ti’ with the ‘3070’ and kept the ‘2090’ as it’s flagship. Instead it included the ‘3070’, too similar to both the budget and premium models to stand out. Nevertheless, Nvidia produced very great graphics cards this year but before any upgrades are made, question the appropriateness of the RTX3080 graphics card in a PC.
