2020 has been a crazy year so far and now it has become even crazier with the wildfires that have spread throughout California. In the past there have been many wildfires in California but on September 9th there was a fire known as the August Complex which is now the largest fire that has occurred in California. Currently there has been 3.2 million acres burned which is an all time record. The burning of acres is a huge problem but there is also large smoke being released from the fires which is affecting cities in California, but this smoke can also spread throughout the country. The smoke that is being released is very harmful and when it is close to the floor it releases harmful particles which will affect us if we breathe them in. These particles are able to enter the bloodstream and in some instances it can cause inflammation in certain areas of the body. Not only is it harder to breathe now, but also the temperature is rising throughout California which makes this situation worse because a large amount of vegetation will dry out and a majority of the places that are on fire are experiencing droughts. It would cost approximately around 2-3 billion dollars so that the U.S. can suppress the fires, but the cost can still increase.
In the community of Pico Rivera and the surrounding cities there has been a slight impact because of the wildfires. Due to the wildfires there was a large amount of smog last week which made it hard to breathe, but this week it has seemed to have gone away a bit which is a positive. For now it is probably best to stay indoors, but if you want to go outside you still can but if you feel as if you can’t really breathe then that should be a sign to stay indoors.
