There’s no doubt that at the start of every decade, a woman always comes to save the pop music industry. In the 2010s, Katy Perry released her album, Teenage Dream, full of iconic hits such as “Firework” and “California Gurls.” Now in the 2020s, Dua Lipa came to the rescue with her sophomore album, Future Nostalgia.
The album consists of 11 tracks and lasts 37 minutes. The first track of the album is titled, “Future Nostalgia.” Just like the rest of the album, the song “Future Nostalgia” holds elements of music from the past. It’s an adequate name for both the song and the album, considering Lipa includes 70s/80s rhythms, yet adds her technique to it.
The leading single of the album, “Don’t Start Now,” is the second track on the album. The song was released on November 1, 2019. It gained worldwide success and why wouldn’t it? It’s a classic pop song that makes you sing your heart out and dance! It’s also a great addition to your women empowerment playlists!
“Don’t show up, don’t come out, don’t stop caring about me now,” Lipa sings, “Walk away, you know how don’t stop caring about me now.”
The following tracks include “Cool,” “Physical,” “Levitating,” and “Pretty Please.” Out of the four, “Cool” has a more cool and calmer vibe. Similar to “Cool,” the last track of the album, “Boys Will Be Boys,” also goes against what most of the songs on the album sound like.
“Boys Will Be Boys” holds a larger message than you think. It’s a song about what it’s like to be a woman in a society in which men are portrayed as superior.
In an interview with Vogue Australia, Lipa said, “So much of the human experience for women revolves around men; how they make us feel, whether that is good or bad. Girls have to go through so much. You cover up yourself to avoid confrontation from men, avoid sexual harassment, people throwing words or catcalling. We change our ways to fit somebody else’s lifestyle. It’s really sad.”
The remaining tracks of the album are “Hallucinate,” “Love Again,” “Break My Heart,” and “Good In Bed.” They seemed to be the most liked songs on the album, according to Twitter. I think “Good In Bed” definitely takes the title for the best song on the album.
Ever since Dua Lipa hit the limelight she has been seen as a constant target for hate, but her new era has shown everyone that she’s one to build on criticism and better herself. Her growth as an artist and a performer has been incredible.
Overall, it’s a 10/10 album! It falls under the category of albums with zero skips! Don’t believe me? Listen to Future Nostalgia available on all streaming platforms now.
