The NBA has suspended the season after a test on Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert was found positive for the Coronavirus.
A conference call was set for Wednesday morning between commissioner Adam Silver and the owners of all NBA teams to discuss how the season would be played out going forward.
The suspension of the season was going into full effect after the conclusion of Wednesday’s games.
Only two games were postponed, the Utah Jazz vs Oklahoma City Thunder and the New Orleans Pelicans vs Sacramento Kings.
Before the NBA choosing to suspend the season, NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported a solution discussed in the conference call in which he said, “the greater consensus among the teams is continuing to play games without fans in the arenas.”
The NBA, NHL, MLB, and MLS collectively decided that they would be closing the locker rooms and clubhouses to the media and keep reporters a six to eight-foot distance away from the players.
Teams in the UEFA Champions League such as Valencia and Atalanta have already played games where no fans were in attendance due to the outbreak.
The NCAA decided that the 2020 NCAA Division I Men's and Women’s Basketball Tournament was going to be played without fans with only essential staff and limited family members allowed to attend.
It is still unclear if the NCAA will follow the NBA’s lead and cancel the NCAA tournament to keep the student-athletes safe from being infected with the virus.
This shock in the sports world where athletes almost seem invincible, now leaves the country worried about how the virus can continue to be spread around the nation.
