Each year, in November, attention is brought to the issues within the Trans community and is a chance for them to educate people for their justice.
Celebrations, events, and activities are held that help members share their stories and daily experiences. The week then leads up to Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20 when people celebrate and remember those who have lost their lives to transphobic violence.
Organizations such as the Full Spectrum Community Outreach center has made the transitioning process easier for hundreds of people and provides resources such as support groups for the LGBTQ+ community. “Transgender people are people. They are just trying to find their way in life and be happy. People are scared of what they don’t know. When you’re transitioning from one gender to another or you’re non-binary, people are scared because they aren’t sure what to expect from that,” said Daniel Tirabassi, with the Full Spectrum Community Outreach Center.
Another organization that fights for the acceptance and social justice of the LGBTQ+ community, GLAAD, has encouraged allies to watch a documentary on Netflix called Disclosure. For Transgender Awareness Week, GLAAD informs that, “Disclosure is an important survey of how media has treated trans people, influencing not only how trans people have come to view themselves but also how the world has, with a call-to-action to better understand and support the community.” The Transgender community’s portrayal through media becomes more expanded with different documentaries and representation online. Honoring the community is a step towards putting an end to the prejudice they face every day.
